Another Impossible Love Story

It is the first Bollywood movie I've seen so may be my opinion is influenced by this fact.

The script is not new. The story is set in the 1900s. We have two lovers who were separated in their childhood: he (Devdas) is from a good family and was sent to the UK to acquire higher studies, she (Parvati) is his neighbour from a poor class and waited for his return during the last ten years. When finally he came home, everybody (especially Paro's mother) expected their wedding but Devdas's father refused. During the confusion, Devdas left Paro and went to Calcutta where he met a prostitute named Chandramukhi. His disgust for her made her fall in love with him. Hurt by Devdas's behaviour, Paro accepts the wedding proposal of an aged man but wealthy. When Devdas realised what he had done, he came back to ask Paro's hand the same day as her wedding. Paro refused and still married the other man. Devdas was upset and began to drink alcool and his addiction to alcool in order to forget Paro lead him to death.

Everything is so much thrilling in this movie: the actors/actresses, the songs, the settings, the costumes, .... It is common to have songs and dance on Bollywood movies but the lyrics of Devdas are really the best love songs. The movie opens with "Silsila ye chahat ka", a song that relates the years during which Paro's been longing for her Devdas, with her constant and unconditionnal love. Later, we have "Hamesha tumko chaha" played when Paro's about to marry the other man. She reveals that she will never love anyone else like the way she loved him and still love him.

As a bollywood movie too, Devdas is a colourful movie: rich colourful settings, colourful costumes. We notice the way people were dressed at that period. The social class also is marked by their dress.

But those who are to be credited for the success of the movie are the actor Shahrukh Khan and the actresses Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit. SRK in the role of Devdas showed his talent. Sometimes a lover boy, suddenly a little bit violent, then sad and drunk, the character of Devdas is very movable but SRK did it. Aishwarya Rai, the beauty of Bollywood too perfomed Paro perfectly. Quite arrogant and proud in her role, she gave the character another value: that of a disappointed woman who takes revenge without being aware of the consequences. Madhuri Dixit (Chandramukhi), a talented dancer proved that even if we are not the first love, our value is not the least. She played the second role but it's in a brilliant way that she interpreted her role. Chandramukhi is a prostitute but she gave her a human aspect. It's not only the lack of money that forces her to do this kind of job, but she can find also another form of love.

Devdas is a great movie and I never feel bored to watch it again and again.
