Avoid This Garage
Avoid at all costs.
A great start but suddenly went downhill very quickly…
2 weeks ago I made a phone call about a Seat Leon. I spoke to the salesman and arranged to come and look the next day.
The salesman was great. Showed us round the car explained that it’s not normally something they stock due to its age. The history and condition of the car meant that they decided to put it up for sale. He gave us the keys to take it out on a test drive. I thought very trusting but he was a keen for us to get to know the vehicle.
The test drive, the car seemed fine initially until its temp went above 90 degrees. Having owned a few VAG cars I knew this wasn’t right, I pulled over in a quiet street and popped the bonnet. Immediately I could smell something overheating, a slight burning smell, I checked the coolant and it looked very clear and old.
We took the car back, we explained the issue to him who assured us that they would look into the coolant issue and fix it, he also said they would put 2 new front tyres on it and give it a fresh MOT.
With all this in mind he asked for a £500 deposit and for us to come and pick it up the following Tuesday. Because he was so upfront and honest with us I had no issues with this provided they fixed the car.
Tuesday comes and we make the Journey to Sleaford and arrive at the garage.
I explain to the guy at the garage who I am, I ask to take the car out to make sure it’s fine. Ok - will go and get it so pulls it round.
I take the car out again and low and behold 10 minutes in, the car goes above 90 again. Hmm, pull over again and noticed the expansion tank hasn’t been put on fully so it wouldn’t create a vacuum to highlight a leak under pressure. Additionally to this, there was liquid on top of the engine, I get a tissue and wipe it down. A clear pink fluid so the fresh coolant but still a leak from somewhere.
A quick video call to my mechanic to show him the situation. He advised me that the garage shouldn’t be selling a car that has clearly got a problem, could be a faulty water pump, thermostat, and they have tried to hide that by not putting the cap back on. A sneaky move that would have gone unnoticed to many.
I take the car back, get the trade plates and go inside the garage. I explain to him that there is still something wrong with it.
He doesn’t seem to happy, he says “well I don’t deal with that side of the mechanics, go outside and speak to the mechanic” I thought a bit blunt but there we go…
Kai, the mechanic then comes out and asks what the problem is. He says there is nothing wrong with the car, the fluid on the engine is from when they changed the coolant. If this was the case why didn’t he clean it up afterwards to make sure there was no leaks. He said they had the car on the ramp for 45 minutes and it didn’t overheat. He said that normally they go above 90. In the 7 VAG cars I’ve had this has never been the case. When asked about the coolant cap he said that must have been mistake and not put it back on right.
He refuses to see that there is anything wrong with the car.
I go back inside and he is on the phone to Kai and is told there’s nothing wrong with the car.
I sit down with him and explain that I won’t be going any further with the car and he says well that’s that then, I’m busy so if you want to go now that will be great.
I ask, what about my deposit? Without hesitation, he responds there’s a £500 cancellation fee so I’ll get nothing as that’s what it says on the paperwork.
This immediately made me think that this isn’t the first time they’ve done this. They knew there was a problem with the car and are annoyed that someone has picked up on it.
I offer to pay for the 2 new tyres on the car and an MOT but he refused straight away. No way was I getting my money back.
It seems such a shame as our first experience from John Peat seemed good, he was great with us.
Unfortunately the second time we were seen to by the company “director”. An arrogant rude and horrible individual.
Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

Go To A Main Dealer!
Near non-existent after sales service - John Peat Motors then engaged a law firm when I tried to enforce my legal rights. I believe John Peat Motors provided me with a car that had faults that I was not aware of because I had to return within 1 month for repairs to electrics and glovebox replacement - AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!! - go to a Main dealer and give yourself peace of mind of a brand with nationwide branches - if -5 was possible it still wouldn't reflect the disappointment from “Lincolnshires No 1 Car Supermarket.
Darren, we have discussed this many times before, when a car is 4 months out of its 3 month warranty period, it is the customers responsibility to maintain the car.

Best Used Car Purchase Experience
I recently bought a used Ford B-max from John Peat Motors and can honestly say it was the best used car buying process I have experienced in my 38 years on the road. From the moment l phoned to enquire about the vehicle through to the test drive and subsequent purchase, l was dealt with in a friendly and professional manner which was a breath of fresh air. The car was exactly, if not better, than the photographs on their website along with a very accurate description. I would not hesitate in buying another car from this dealer or recommend them to friends and family.

Absolutely fantastic service from the moment we stepped onto the forecourt.
He was brilliant at giving us information on every aspect of the car. Once we decided on the car the whole process was done quickly with no stress at all. The car was ready on the day that we were originally told. Once we arrived to collect the car it was sat there all ready and waiting.
Anyone sat wondering whether to buy from John peat then believe me they are all fab. This is the 3rd car we have had from them and the service is always second to none.
