Excellant Service

North Star garages provides a fantastic service for used cars. No hassle, very professional and a good selection of used cars. From the moment i entered the forecourt i was assisted by an agent who was on hand to answer any questions i had but left me alone to browse when i needed space to think. Found a fantastic Audi A1, fair price and in great condition. Offered a fair price on a part exchange for my car.

The process of buying and part exchanging was seamless from start to finish. He is a great salesman and very professional. I can't think of a single criticism. If you are looking to buy a used car and or part exchange you would be mad not to pay North Star a visit.

Avoid Them!!!

Bought a Nissan juke in Feb 2019, was told it had new MOT and service.....brakes were terrible, hand brake didn't work properly, they pretended to fix it and ended up breaking the radio ariel so that doesn't work properly. Found out the MOT that we thought was due in Feb 2020 has already expired in December. I would never ever go back to north star, they have no respect for customers and will sell you whatever rubbish they can for a fast buck.

So Far,so Good!

I bought a Land Rover Freelander about 3 months ago(it's nearing the end of its free warranty,so I'm gambling a bit with this review). I bought it because it was a good price for the year of the vehicle, knowing it was high mileage but it has a LandRover service history. It has had 3 different faults which were rectified quickly and with no argument, which is all you can ask for, really. The staff have been unfailingly polite and I must mention the salesman who actually stayed late one evening to help the mechanic fix a window problem. It's a used car so I don't expect perfection, but up to now they've been very helpful.

Clio Light Held Together With Silicon Is Considered Ok!

Having purchased a 13 plate Clio with 20k miles on the clock in late July 2016, we found the staff to be helpful and friendly. The car, however, has a few problems. One with the rear door handle didn't open the door. An MOT failure to all other garages but not to North Star. We were accused of damaging it after purchase! Then there's the bent rear bumper and broken rear light fitting held in place with silicon. This is how the vehicle was received by them, we were told, and so it's perfectly acceptable to pass it on to the new owner. Communication with their staff has always been polite and prompt but washing their hands of a problem is totally unacceptable.

We are also not in possession of the HPi certificate. I wonder if there's more to that than meets the eye!

We do NOT recommend you purchase from this garage. Take your custom elsewhere.

Sold An Unsafe Car

North Star Cars, Sayers Common, sold me a Mercedes 220 CDI in November last Year. North Star Cars own workshop had supposedly carried out a Mercedes compliant service and also fitted new Brake Discs and Pads and new tyres all round.

I drove the car for a week and felt that the car seemed to be jumping across the road when it hit a bump in the road, the car after a couple more weeks also started to vibrate quite heavily under braking. I knew that North Star Cars had given me a 3 month warranty with the car and waited till after Christmas to contact them. I contacted North Star Cars in the New year to inform them of the issues but they could not fit me in till February. When I eventually got the car to North Star Cars, I informed them further that I felt the new brake discs they had fitted were cheap and also I felt that they should inspect the cars suspension as I would suggest suspension wear was responsible for the car jumping and also the heavy vibration under braking would have deteriorated the suspension even more.

I received the car back from North Star Cars with the workshop stating they had replaced the brakes and that they had inspected the suspension but not found anything. I drove the car and was pleased with the brakes but the car still had a tendency to jump and it was not any better.

I checked some of the Mercedes Forums to see if this was a fault with the car, and found that the tyres could be responsible. The tyres that North Star Cars fitted were budget and directional which supposedly is a no-no with these cars, also the forums indicated that the tyres may need to be worn in a little, so I left it with a view that the problem may improve.

In April the car needed to be serviced and I took the car to my own Garage who are an Independant Mercedes Specialist. I requested my garage to look at the drivability issue. I received a call from the Garage to say that they needed to carry out a B service not an A service because the car had not been serviced correctly at its last service, as the consumable items showed significant contamination. The garage also stated that they have inspected the car and found both Track Rod ends worn with the left one significantly worn and I was advised to replace immediately. The Front Anti Roll bar bushes were also worn and the rear near side shock absorber needed replacing. The garage also informed me that the two rear tyres needed to be replaced as the crown of the tread was coming away from the tyres. I was told that these worn suspension parts were responsible for the drivability issues and that the tyres fitted were not compatible.

I immediately replaced the tyres at a cost of 500 pounds and booked the car into the garage to have the parts replaced.

I contacted North Star Cars, and informed them of my situation, and that I felt North Star Cars did not do a proper service and they failed to address the suspension issues when requested under the warranty.

Initially they brushed me off with the standard rhetoric that the car was serviced correctly and inspected at the time. I suggested that the drivability issues were there at the time of purchase and they were obliged to fix the issue under the warranty. I informed them that my own garage had stated the car was unsafe and that the car was most likely sold in the condition.

North Star Cars owner failed to respond to my communications so I paid a visit to the North Star Cars reception to show I was serious about North Star Cars bad customer service. I requested to see him in person but was informed he was not available at the time, I then informed the salesmans that I was willing to wait all day there, which then he informed me that he was at a funeral.

He did email me stating North Star Cars were not liable. I informed him that I would through the use of the internet and reviews forums inform prospective customers of the customer service they could expect from North Star Cars. He replied stating he may look at the issue if my garage put in writing the issues found and their own considerations.

I complied with his email requests and last week he phoned me to tell me he wouldn't pay the 730 pound bill for the suspension parts that I had been left with.

So as it stands I now feel it necessary to inform any potential North Star Cars customer of the customer service they can expect from North Star Cars. I will not buy a car from them again and I suggest that if anyone had bought or does buy a car from North Star Cars carry out their own independent inspection, as their own workshop cannot be trusted.

Beware This Garage Is Not As Honest As They Make Out!!!!

North Star sold me a Golf which has been involved in two accidents. They told me when I bought it that it was only with them for sale as it was an ex-mobility car which had come to the end of the three year period. Yeah right, very well polished, it wasn't obvious at the time, only becoming noticeable after several washes. The rear passenger door is not as shiny as the rest of the car and being black it shows!!! There is also some white spray paint on the inside of the door which is not seen when the door is shut. This was obviously a repair that was done on the cheap and not put through insurance. When I had the car serviced after a year, the guy told me that it had also been in a rear collision but this was not noticeable to me as the repair was a good one. The rear parking sensors don't work and only a VW dealership can put the problem right AT FURTHER COST!!! The car runs well but all the damage have tainted my enjoyment of it and I would NEVER buy from this garage again. I wouldn't have bought it if I had known that it had been in an accident but would have looked at the rest of their stock. HONESTY is always the best policy, this garage will never have my business again or any of my friends and anyone I can inform about their shifty way of doing business.

Buyers Steer Clear, This Company Have No Ethics

I bought a Mini Cooper from here 2 months ago. Since the day of purchase it has had an ongoing problem with the airbag warning light. This is a safety issue. North Star have refused to refund my money, despite my rights under the Sale of Goods Act, and they have refused to let us have a courtesy car while the dispute is being mediated. They initially refused a repair too, until Trading Standards got involved. I dont want a repair carried out, I have lost faith in the car. But North Star are refusing to give me my money back. They are listed as a "Buy with Confidence" trader, obviously I dont share this opinion! Their website says "Motor cars, being the complex items that they are today, occasionally do go wrong; however you can be assured that when you become a North Star customer any problems will be dealt

with promptly, efficiently and courteously." DO NOT BELIEVE IT! I am still waiting for the issue to be resolved, meanwhile I have no car and North Star "courteously" refused me a courtesy car. I wont be going near this company ever again.

Nice Car, Poor Experience.

We purchased a 6 year old Mini Cooper from North Star.

The price was fairly typical and the car itself is very good. The salesman were pushy and were clearly focused in nothing more than making the sale, typical for this type of dealer. The usual tactics of “some other guy is trying to sort finance for it so it may go in the next couple of days” and so on.

One other thing that I particularly did not like was to be made to indicate how likely I was to buy it before we were allowed to test drive, I don’t think this at all….I want to give that indication AFTER I have test driven.

Amazing that places like this have their “Pre delivery inspections” and “so many point checks” yet they failed to notice that the air conditioning didn’t work at all on the Mini. It was nearly a week before they could fit us in, they wouldn’t give a loan car and their location meant I had to get a bus and then a lift from a colleague in to work. So when I got the lift and then a bus back and I was told it wasn’t ready….you can imagine how happy the offer of calling me a taxi for my 19 mile journey home was (pretty sure they weren’t going to cover the cost) I had to make a fuss and was then given a loan car.

The issue was resolved, it needed a new condenser…..but there is no excuse for this not being noticed during their “checks”…..which basically made me think these checks do not exist. The service indicator was also on despite it being services a few months ago…..why? why was this not picked up before we collected?

We also have now found that they didn't date the change of ownership section of the V5 correctly which has resulted in us paying an extra months tax on the car we part exchanged.

I would not recommend North Star and would advise caution.

Speak As You Find

I've recently purchased a fourth car from North Star, I thought out of interest I'd have a look at their reviews! They do seem to come in for a bit of stick on here. So to speak as I find, I've previously bought three cars from North Star over the years two for my wife and one for myself and have had no issues at all, fair trade in fair purchase price and the cars have always been nicely prepared and all three presented no problems during ownership. Bought another car from them a couple of weeks ago (Chevrolet Spark) and had new tyres fitted as part of the deal. From the first I encountered steering wheel wobble at speed. I didn't look forward to contacting North Star after reading some of the reviews, but I have to say it couldn't have been better. The wheels were re-balanced while I waited free of charge and the "wobble" has gone. I dare say I'll return to them in three years or so when it's time change car again.

Reinforcing The Negative Stereotypes Of Used Car Dealers

I made a very expensive mistake purchasing a car from North Star. The car I bought had two major faults, one mechanical and one electrical, but neither of the repairs were covered in the companies guarantee; which incidentally is not worth the paper it is written on. The companies own MOT service is dubious. The car was sold to me with unregistered number plates which is unlawful. My experience has been completely negative and infuriating, hence this review.

Dear Mr Greer,

Despite a full search i cannot find a sale record to match your name or comments. You do not mention the make model of car, and neither do we operate our own MOT services. Would you please contact me to discuss, or at least identify the transaction so that may investigate your complaints.

yours faithfully Mark L Buckle Sales Director North Star Sussex Ltd
