My Philips Dvd-r985 Dvd Recorder Skips When Playin

My Philips DVD-R985 DVD recorder skips when playing DVD's. It makes no difference if the DVD's are new or old! It has done it ever since it was new. I guess I shouldn't be so picky... it only cost $600. What a pile of rubbish! I will never purchase anything with the Philips name on it again!!!!

Unlike Many Others I Had Quite A Few Good Years Wi

Unlike many others I had quite a few good years with the equipment, but was continually frustrated by it. Titling is ridiculous. Playback (even of rented or new DVD's) is sketchy. Unit seems to function fine and then not. I did get Philips to repair the unit free of charge once, but that was about 6 months ago and the unit is now failing again. Mostly I'm angry that considering its price you should be able to rely on it to work for longer than 2 years.

Purchased This Expensive Toy A Couple Of Years Ago

Purchased this expensive toy a couple of years ago. The Philips DVD-R985 worked fine the first several times but had some difficulty using it. Was very slow when trying to boot up. Only recorded about 7 discs before it stopped working. I can only play DVDs now, no more recording. Called Philips about the recording problem. They said they would send a CD to fix the problem. Still waiting after 3 months. Called again and they said to download a CD from their website. Did that, but the damn thing still won't record. Very disappointed with Philips. The product seemed very good in the beginning but failed down the road.

I just keep recording speed set at SP. I don't know whether the problem is mixing up speeds on a single disc, or what. But with this adjustment the recorder seems to function pretty much as it should.

The Philips Dvd R985 Is A Piece Of Junk. I Couldn'

The Philips DVD R985 is a piece of junk. I couldn't agree more with the other poor reviews. I had my unit sent in for repair right before the warranty expired and had a new laser mechanism installed. The unit worked fine for about 2 months and now it will not record anything it just turns itself off. I tried to upgrade the firmware but that failed now the drawer will not open. No more Philips products for me. Tony A

I Purchased Two Of The Philips Dvd R985 Dvd Record

I purchased two of the Philips DVD R985 DVD Recorders and they both offer surprises. You never know when it will record, it may quit on you right at the beginning, in the middle, or at the very end when you are attempting to finalize. I too, thought it was the media causing the problems, but they sometimes give problems even with their own Philips discs. I agree that they are a piece of junk that no one should have to live with after paying such a huge price in the beginning. We now have gone to the Sony GX7 units and seldom have any problems. We make DVD discs from our helicopter DVCAM footage.

I couldn't agree more. At any point while recording, the machine may suddenly flash "DISK WARNING" and stop - ruining the entire recording. "DISK ERROR" is another favorite messsage (whatever it means, it stops recording). Besides ruining the intended recording, the machine also often renders the disk unusable after that. I too, kept discarding media, until I realized that what should be thrown in the trash is the PHILIPS DVD R985!

Everything you are saying is true. a real piece of rubbish. I spent the bucks the damm thing works fine for a few months and then, DIES one litle bit at a time. I have done the firmware upgrade nodda i tried diferent brands of disk nodda. i jump up and down and curse the damm thing and again nodda

The Best Features Of This Philips Dvd R985 Dvd Rec

The best features of this PHILIPS DVD R985 dvd recorder are ilink, SVideo recordings, copying from your home films or VHS, Cable TV and to copy from another DVD player. (Not Copying from Manufacturers discs - which are copyprotected

Regarding the Quality (on HQ)is in fact High Quality ! Ease of use, good. Updated firmware is free from Philips to upgrade several areas of importance. The main flaw is getting (at times and with certain blank discs) are those disc errors. The quick solution is to unplug it and then replug the electrical cord to system. This resets the unit and your recording is pretty much guaranteed to work .

The Very First Time I Attempted To Make Dvds From

The very first time I attempted to make DVDs from my digital camera with the PHILIPS DVD R985, I got "disk error". Five calls to Phillips landed me with an "upgrade disk"...it dont work! Now I have to send it in to be fixed. I was going to use this in my buiness now I have to buy another DVD recorder to use while this piece of junk is being fixed. I will still have a piece of junk and I paid $999 for it!!!!!!! I will never buy another product with the name PHILLIPS on it!

Likewise, I bought one of these over a year ago, and finally it kept giving me "disk error", and I tried different media. The only saving grace is that on an expensive piece of electronics like that, I buy extended warranties, something that I never do with less expensive equipment. Circuit City did not carry that DVDR anymore, but located one for me, since I did not like the functions on the ones that they offered for a replacement. So the replacement Phillips 985 did fine now for about 5 months.......now "disk error" on the same media that I have been using since I got the replacement. Definitely a bad deal, but I still have the extended warranty, so I can get a different unit, and this time, I definitely will get a DIFFERENT product.

No more Philips for me.. I'll have to say I'm with you on your evaluation of the Philips DVD R985. I've had two of them.. I still have one.. It plays great, it just can't record. Maybe 1 out of 10 times it will surprise me. I've tried every kind of media I could find.. The same with all of them. I've updated, downgraded and updated again.. Same thing.. After ready so many of these bad reviews I finally thought I'd chime in as well. Had a Panasonic. It always worked but it was a little limited and I didn't care for the DVD-RAM disc idea. I've now got a Pioneer DVR-310. I love it! It's not even the top of the line and it is GREAT.. Firewire BOTH directions! I have numerous animations, backgrounds, Chroma-key ready pieces that I have dumped back and forth from Pioneer to DVCAM, always pristine and always perfect.. One last comment.. I also have a Philips Coffee maker... It also SUCKS.. No more Philips for me..

Phillips Did Send An Update Cd For My Philips Dvd

Phillips did send an update CD for my PHILIPS DVD R985 which didn't help. Now of course it is out of warranty so who knows how much this wil cost to send to the factory service. Rather poor I think when I have never been able to write to +R discs.

Good Luck, I hope you got the extended warranty free of charge !

hibbsj

Even though the machine was out of warranty. Phillips has agreed to a paid extended warranty. So now I will send it back for them to deal with.

Johndh

Personally, I would take your case to a lawyer as you probably have a case against Phillips. Regardless of the guarantee, the product does not sound as if it has ever been 'fit for the purpose' it was intended for.
