Funchal Pestana Miramar

Funchal Pestana Miramar:

Lovely situation between the old town and the new town in Funchal. Easy walking distances to and fro in both cases. Good choice of eating facilities in the resort, and we like the terrace restaurant for al fresco lunches, with good views of the port. Staff very helpful and cleaning services excellent. We love it!

We were there for three nights over New Year 2005/6 and booked at the last minute through Expedia.

The Miramar is a big complex of hotel and apartments, and it takes a bit of time to find your way around.

We were in an apartment, but not through choice.

The apartment was clean and well equipped. Our deal included breakfast and this was taken in the dining area of the hotel. The breakfast was fine and the staff in the dining room helpful.

The hotel is described as sea facing which is true, but there is four-lane road right in front, plus another row of houses, so you would need to choose your room carefully on a high floor to get a sea view.

Some rooms are at the front, and there could be some road noise when sleeping with the windows open in the summer.

There are plenty of restaurants nearby and Funchal town is a about a 20 minute stroll.

Overall I was pretty happy with the complex and the facilities - but with that many rooms I expect it could get pretty crowed in the summer and space around the two pools would be hard to find.

The big disappointment for me was unhelpful attitude of the reception staff at the Miramar apartments. When we checked in I asked if any other rooms were available and was happy to pay an upgrade - the lady said they were full - but I think they were far from full and she couldn't be bothered.

The apartment was heated but the heating was only turned on at the request of the guest - I made the request and nothing happened.
